@eagletistic i get it now, i was asking like when pass blocking. they don't teach us to punch at my school. and if so with other schools i would of had the county record for most sack in a season, but the opposing blockers step back and hold in the shoulder pads
Punch blocking is used for pass blocking. Technique is to have a wide base and pop the oponnets numbers step back regroup and punch again. You do this so the defender does not get to you body to do a move on you.
On running plays you can fire out and punch, I teach thumbs up. Not suppose to hold but thumbs up you can grab the shoulder pads were the straps clip on control your defender. Just let go if your arms get extended.
Can someone answer this question for me. We are taught to grab inside the number in Pop warner and now highschool. In Professional football, I usually see them not grabbing inside the numbers, just punch and block with forearms(thats wat my uncle taught me). Even in such video games like APF 2k8, on pass blocking they are pushing you, no grabbing. Is there separate rules for blocking?
@bea27997 I had that same question I'm undersized but I have a good technique and a lot of power but I play D-Tackle,Defensive Guard, and D-End and I can play all offensive lineman positions including TE. So if have the right technique, strength, and a lot of heart then you can play OL. By the way 75% of my team weighs at least 15-25 lbs more than me.
I have a question I am 12 and i am 100 ibs and i play for a team of midgets. My question is do you have to be fat or big to play OL or you just have to be strong?. I aint that big but i am really strong. Would this position workout for me?
@LBFootballCoach When i learned this stuff i started to learn it this year im a freshman we where always told to block with our forearms because they dont like the Punch and grab but like CHG says and my Dad Punch dont block old school. But i seem to always get called from holding when i reach block but i grab the inner part of there shoulderpads where there numbers are so any tip so i dont get called for this
Reach block: first step to the reach side (6" power step) at this point there will be a collision (As Coach says, yes the face and the hands). The second step in a reach block is a 6-12" step to split the D-lineman's legs (I teach my guys that they are trying to knee the other guy in the nuts) they will never actually do this but it gets their leg and foot in the right place. At this point; in position for the 3rd step, the foot that made the initial 6" power step swings and seals the DL.
