A water goblet is forced to vibrate by running a finger over its rim. The stick-slip friction between the finger and the glass causes the glass to resonate in sync with the slipping and sticking of the finger. This forced vibration produces a distinct pitch. The pitch is then altered by removing water from the goblet, thus altering the speed of vibrations within the glass, and ultimately the frequency of its vibrations.
