The troops of the 57th Division unearthed parts of an LTTE aircraft yesterday.
Our representative Kelum Gunatilake said that the tigers had buried claymore mines, booby traps, RPGs, landmines and stocks of ammunition as in the area usual. There were aircraft spares amongst them. The troops also found a water scooter which could be laden with 25 kilograms of explosives. High powered boat engines, their parts and aircraft components were also buried close to them. The high tech equipment used in the cockpit were also buried. The signal lights used on the runway, airway charts, pilot data, three propellers, five used tyres and another five unused tyres were also recovered. The Tigers have not had the opportunity to complete building the aircraft due to the ongoing operations. Foreign expertise regarding the aircraft technology had been obtained by the LTTE which was used in building runways. The troops found evidence that the LTTE had been modifying an aircraft to carry out attacks against other aircraft. The take off of a glider on 19th march 1995 marked the inauguration of the LTTE Air Wing in memory of the LTTE member named Kittu . An Engineer of the Canadian Airlines named V. Swarnalingam alias Shankar had been the chief of the Air Wing. The public were shown the air power of the LTTE on 27th November 1998 when an aircraft sprayed flowers during the Wattappalei temple function..
