Just talking about a few ideas for alternatives to chicken feed. Some which could be added to regular feed boost its nutrition and add better quality than what we probably get from the commercial processed feed.

Mostly I just talk about a thread at sshomestead.com and growing duckweed.

Hope you like the editing, still needs some work on getting it all done right. Free Music from:

  • is cracked corn the same as layers mash

  • @Bernard5639 Layer mash has corn and other things ground up together. Cracked corn is just corn. Scratch is a combination of different seeds, everything from corn to millet. I usually mix that in with my layer pellets.

  • in my area rabit feed is 14$ cracked corn is 9$. i like the idea of duckweed but i am not haveing much luck growing it on my pond

  • @doyouseewhatisee2010 Do you have fish in your pond? Fish, ducks, and many other things eat it, so that could be a reason. I was thinking about setting up an aquaponics system and growing it in its own area. Seen some that raise crayfish in a tank and pump the water to the duckweed tank.

  • I have a video called "Black Soldier fly Harvest 2!!!". It shows how my BSF composter works and how the larvae self harvest. You may need a bigger composter to get the right amount of larvae to feed to your chickens but a great feed and the self harvesting is so great!

  • Just an idea but you could use food scraps of even smaller amounts of your chicken feed to feed Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. BSF larvae are like 70% protein and 30% fat! Not only that but they self harvest if you set it up right:)

  • Thanks Josh! Those rabbit chickens were the best I ever tasted, We only fed rabbit food to the meat birds. (our egg layers forage all day) I still want to grow the duck weed. you can grow it in even asmall pan of water as long as you have nutrients fom what i understand. But not in the winter! You are great man!! Thanks, Ggirl
