What is the diffrence between normal and Synergy?

I've tried to get my COD fangirl friend to play the Half-Life series. He actually said it was stupid. I literally wanted to murder him.
Point is, I should have never tried anyways, because COD gamers are the least mature and if something is not exactly like COD, they think it sucks. I'm a BF player and BF is shit compared to Half-Life.
