Oliver Twist is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens, published by Richard Bentley in 1838. This is the story of an orphan Oliver Twist, who have endured a miserable existence in a hospital, then placed with an undertaker, where he escapes and goes to London where he met Artful Dodger, leader of a gang of young pickpockets. Oliver was taken to the lair of their seniors trainer criminal Fagin, naively unaware of their illegal activities.
Oliver Twist is remarkable for the romantic portrayal "Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives. The book has exposed the cruel treatment of more than a waif-child in London, which increased international concern in which is sometimes called "The London Waif Great Depression": the large number of orphans in London at the time of Dickens. book's subtitle, The Parish's Boy Progress alludes to Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and also a pair of popular 18th-century caricature series by William Hogarth, "A Rake's Progress" and "A Harlot's Progress.
An early example of the social novel, the book drew public attention to various contemporary ills, including poor law, child labor and the recruitment of children as criminals. Dickens mocks the hypocrisies of his time in the serious issues surrounding novel with irony and black humor. The novel could have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of the difficulties as a child laborer in a cotton mill has been widely circulated in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens own early youth as a child who works has contributed to the development history of the.
Oliver Twist has been the subject of movie adaptations and numerous television and is the basis for a successful musical, and the multiple Academy Award winning 1968 film made from it.
