SHINDEN FUDO RYU - HAPPO BIKEN JUTSU 'Mastering the Art of Using the Body'. Soke was at his best in demonstrating natural, simple movement that not only produced incredible results but had even the top Shihan teachers baffled and amazed. Soke was a nonstop dynamo in sharing endless variations and principles of Shinden Fudo Ryu wazas after senior Shihan instructors shared a traditional waza.

  • I'll tell you why the senior students were 'baffled', ninjutsucom. It's because he was making it up as he went along. I could make up stuff and pass it off as 'advanced martial arts'. That's the thing with the Bujinkan. The instructor always looks better because he's winging it and everyone has to start from scratch.

  • What gives you the idea that we are making it all up? Well we must be good at it then.

It takes many, many years of solid training in basic techniques until you can mix them up spontaneously when being attacked, espeically with weapons. If a person thinks that they are going to do block a against punch b in real combat they will be greatly mistaken. Mixed martial arts has proved that. Anyway have a great day and thanks for your comment and checking out our videos.

    Best,

  • obiwancanuck, I understand what you are saying. It is true that many Buj dojos do similar things. This is because Bujinkan training is based on kata from a few ryu-ha. However, the fact that each dojo has its own 'flavour' is due to the lack of attention to correctness of form and, thereby, function of the Buj as a whole. So, instead of everyone simply striving to properly learn actual kata and techniques, they just 'wing' it and do whatever comes to mind.

  • In order to be able to improvise a technique or "make it up", one would have to know what they were doing. Yes, you could make stuff up, but would it work? Only if you had a solid background and could go from there.

Just my humble opinion; please don't see this as a challenge, more a conversation.

  • slapupchrist, you say that Hatsumi and all Bujinkan instructors make it up as they go. Yet IBDA has syllabi and ranking systems that they follow. True, not all Bujinkan students/ Hatsumi students are members of IBDA. But I've seen the same techniques demonstrated by different shihan at different dojo - if they were making it up as the went, how could they all know the same thing? As for ninjustucom's comment about having a solid foundation, I'd have to agree with that. (continued)
