Wanko-Soba is a popular local (but very touristic) cuisine in Morioka, Japan, which has more than 100 years of history. The word 'wanko' is a local dialect for a soup bowl, and 'soba' means noodle in Japanese language.
A small portion of soba noodle is served in a wooden bowl with a little bit of soup. Waiters, with extra bowls of soba noodle on trays, are standing right next to the customers. Once the serving starts, the waiter keeps adding another portion of noodle into your bowl every time you finish one. It keeps going on until you give up by covering your bowl with a lid.
It is said that 15 servings are equal to the 1 serving of normal soba noodle dish. Average male customers eat around 60 bowls. According to the waiter at the restaurant we tried, the record holder is a woman who finished more than 500 bowls.
Six of us gave a try and four of us made it more than 100 bowls.
