Leo Ryan was a very brave man. He was the only government official brave enough to do something about it. The American ambassador in Guyana was unfriendly and dismissive of the concerned relatives. He refused to lift a finger to help. He later got a promotion. Shame.

Ryan had been in Congress for five years, so he just won his fourth term. Also, he traveled to Newfoundland with Jim Jeffords (a republican) to try to stop the slaughter of seals. He seemed very "hands on." People warned him but he really believed he could work it out with Jones.
