As a result of a long-term partnership between scouts from Germany and Mongolia, a unique initiative developed: we want to help eradicate the lack of English school books in the town of our scouting friends in Mongolia. For this reason, we collect used English textbooks as well as children and youth books in order to inaugurate a school library in Mongolia this summer and supply 26 countryside schools with much-needed school books.
From March to June 2009, we collected more than 13,000 used English books from private donors, libraries, schools, publishers as well as organizations in Europe. The books were categorized according to preset criteria and loaded into a container on July 10th.
Mid August, a group of eight scouts from Germany will travel to Mongolia and help set up a local library as well distribute the books to 26 countryside schools in the the book donations in the province of Övörkhangai. All activities will be performed jointly by scouts from Mongolia and Germany. In addition, we will perform training courses for Mongolian English teachers as well as librarians to ensure the proper use of the books in English classes as well as daily library service operations.
In the long-term, this year's initiative serves as a pilot project for subsequent "book bridge" project. In this regard, we pay special attention to the adoption of donated English school books in Mongolian school classes as well as the setup of sustainable library operations.
