This animated video depicts a selection of Chapter 5 from New York Times columnist David Brooks' new book, THE SOCIAL ANIMAL.
Most success stories are told at the surface level of life. They describe getting good grades, learning certain skills, getting the right jobs and learning the right techniques to get ahead. This story is told one level down, at the level of emotions, intuitions, biases, and deep inner longings, where character is formed and the seeds of accomplishment grow.

I have the audiobook. I'm at chapter 11 & Harold is married. His wife is in the middle of a corporate coup.

If you find this animation compelling, it may interest you that it was done by Flash Rosenberg who also does "Conversation Portraits" for the New York Public Library's NYPL Live series. Her work with luminaries from Jay-Z to Andrei Codrescu and not to mention Emily Dickinson (for Girls Club/NEA Big Read) is really a joy, found at vimeo.com/flashrosenberg.

Great piece...It reminds me of me...Now at age 52 with two masters (MS computer science & MBA). High school was simply FUN for me - no homework & no studying but a lot of fun hanging out in East Harlem.I was also one of those "dumb" parents illustrated.
