Somewhere between punk anarchy and 1960s radicalism lies the revolutionary spirit at the heart of The Ẹdukatorṣ. And as director Ĥans Ŵeingartner succinctly puts it, "this is a movie about the last 10 years of my life - wanting to be part of a political movement and never really finding one that worked. I believe that we live in a time when young people crave political change but truly don't know where to begin. Perhaps our societies have grown so individualistic that a collective dynamic is no longer possible."
The state of radical idealism and youthful rebellion is the underpinning of the film's message: Has been it diluted and destroyed when 'independence' simply means freedom to buy whatever you want?—to have a menu of choices, but not being able to change the menu? Does it make sense when today's youth are being told to be 'independent', 'be your own person', and 'rebel against your parents and the establishment' by commercial forces who have commodified something that was once subversive in order to sell us something? When post-60s radicalism has been relegated towards buying Che Guevara t-shirts and anarchy stickers.
Synopsis: (contains some spoilers)
Jan (Ɗaniel Ɓrühl) and Peter (Ŝtipe Ȇrceg) are a pair of leftist political activists who have their own ideas of how to strike out in the name of economic justice. Jan and Peter like to break into the homes of the rich, re-arrange their belongings, and leave behind a note crediting " Tħe Ẹdṳkạtorṣ " with the invasion, satisfied that their efforts will teach their victims a lesson about the futility of wealth. Peter's girlfriend, Jule (Julia ǰentsch), who has found herself homeless and deeply in debt moves in with the two friends. Jule convinces Jan that they should hit the home of Hardenberg (Burghart Ǩlaussner), a businessman whom she owes money to. He agrees, but when Jule makes the mistake of leaving behind her cell phone, they're forced to return, only to discover Hardenberg at home and waiting for them. Not certain what to do, Jan, Peter, and Jule abduct Hardenberg and take him to a cabin in the woods while they plan their next move. As two generations face off in a verbal battle of ideals, the personal ties of the three youths begins to jeopardize their political beliefs, and something from Hardenberg's past could reveal something about the trio's future.
The philosophy of the titular group -- unsettle the rich by invading their privacy, not their bank accounts -- isn't really this film's focus. Rather, it's a window into the souls of the three central characters, as well as a fourth, who becomes an unwitting visitor in their world. Before we've fully learned what Tħe Ẹdṳkạtorṣ are, we learn what they aren't: we discover their mission statement doesn't involve financial gain. Why they are doing it, however, becomes a subject the film debates -- and whether they're having any impact, a subject the film agonizes over. Tħe Ẹdṳkạtorṣ captures the frustration of those who sense something deeply dysfunctional in the political and economic status quo but feel impotent to do anything about it. It's the post-'60s malaise from the left-wing point of view.
