He came from Pretoria, from the Blue Bulls to smash nearly every South African rugby record including most Test tries (38) and most Tests (89). At over 6 feet tall, he was a giant at scrumhalf, towering over the likes of Justin Marshall and George Gregan.

He left his mark on three world cup tournaments, contributing rugged defense and aggressive, 'sniping' runs as often as he could. His tackle in the 1995 final, on a rampaging Jonah Lomu was to go down in rugby folklore but was to become just one moment in a long list of highlights including a hat-trick against Scotland at Murrayfield, a Tri-Nations championship and the 1995 World Cup.

Considered by many to be the greatest scrum half to have ever played the game; Joost van der Westhuizen, a proud South African and loyal Springbok.

  • My most sympathized thoughts for Joost van der Westhuizen. Indded a rush of sdness in my vains. When I start to play rugby in Italy, in a little town (Arezzo) I was appointed as a scrum half and my friend, senior scrum half mentor, gave me tons of tapes to watch and learn form the masters. He used to say "Watch all the Springboks game I gave you, in particularly Van der Westhuizen, his hands, the way he plays, he is the best scrum half ever" indeed a force of inspiration for my rugby life.Grazie

  • Good Health Joost, all the best from England...
