This is a song inspired by a passage from the book of the Wisdom of Solomon which I have always found as intriguing as it is beautiful. "God did not make death" (Wisdom 1:12-16). Long have I been dismayed by the fact that humanity as a whole sees death as something "natural" or as "part of life"... nothing could be farther from the Truth. This song begins as a monologue pronounced by death trying to seduce us into believing that death is the sweet repose and answer to the hardships of our life on earth, then it ends with the verses of Wisdom expressing the intention of our Creator and our Father as to our reason of being. My brothers and sisters, as my mandolin hero Bill Monroe once advised "Don't let old Satan hold your hand"; life is for the living, or as father Philippe once put it, "The quality of our life will be measured by the quality of our Love."
God Did Not Make Death
Not far from here, from you and me
There is a place where the flowers never whither and the songbird never dies
Come to me and meet me there, where the flowers never whither
Wear the dress your mother made, then quickly find me hither
Say farewell to the life you know, to the cold and the wind outside
Kiss goodbye those whom you Love, let no tear fall from your eye
Bring me wine, fruit of your field, its color the deepest red
Know full well it will be your last when we drink it to the dregs
We'll lie down by the sea, by the crashing of its waves
We'll close our eyes to the stars in the sky, and gently fade away.
God did not make death, nor does he delight in the death of the sinner.
He made all things that they might have life, and live with him forever.
If you want to use this song, I probably won't be against it, but please ask my permission. Thanks, Brother Michael Paul.
