The Motronic computer failed in this bike. The cooling fan on 16 valve K model BMW's is controlled by the computer. The fan could not be activated which resulted in the rider's inner right thigh being scalded by boiling coolant while riding. The thermostat and temperature 'switch' were replaced and the fan functioned when jumped but would not activate otherwise. Replacing the computer solved the problem. The placement of the coolant resevoir and the way the resevoir vents are just some examples of very poor design by BMW. When these overheat, the coolant is expelled (under high pressure) directly up and onto the riders right leg. Unfortunately, her leg took quite a while to heal :(
Yeah, these bimmer engineers can be quite stubborn sometimes, resulting in real obvious oversights sometimes. Yet we love these bikes anyway.
