Russ Harris, M.D., M.P.H., shares his views on the new mammography screening recommendation issued on Nov. 16, 2009, by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Dr. Harris is a national expert on cancer screening issues. He served on the US Preventive Services Task Force from 2002-2007 and was one of the leaders in the Task Force recommendations for screening mammography. Additionally, he conducted systematic reviews for the Task Force between 1997-2002.

Dr. Harris is professor of medicine, adjunct professor of epidemiology and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research interests include practice and community interventions to improve cancer prevention activities, thus reducing the cancer burden on society. He has been particularly involved with the following cancer prevention activities: screening for breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancers; tobacco cessation efforts; and chemoprevention for breast cancer. He is especially interested in encouraging shared decision-making for these prevention activities.
