@aPrincessOfBabylon Because one of the important persons of Glee ( Don't know what he was/is, Producer, Writer or something else ) always wanted Lea Michele as the "Star" of the show. He said this in an interview on the german DVD of the first thirteen Episodes.

This isn't even the song from the episode - some one has dubbed the beat over the top thats why it sounds so shocking! The song was actually sung acapella.
