The world doesn't even really have to get any smaller: the difference in flying from Edinburgh to London vs Embra to Amsterdam / the Hague / Brussels / Stavanger is about the time it takes to tip your lap tray back up. Another few minutes gets you to Oslo or Hamburg or whatever. Dublin is of course closer than London.
The real "distance" to these places - what isolates us - is the political and infrastructural bottleneck - having to go through London quango, department or HQ to do business.

Scotland HAS lost its identity.
Every web address ends in ".co.uk" and just about every list of countries has....Ireland, but not Scotland.
