DemocracyNow.org - In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Emmy Award-winning actress Roseanne Barr starred in the popular and groundbreaking show on television titled simply, "Roseanne," the first TV series to openly advocate for gay rights. "Roseanne" featured one of the first lesbian kisses on TV — in an episode when Roseanne kisses Mariel Hemingway. "Roseanne" was also the first sitcom to ever feature a gay marriage. The series tackled other controversial topics as well: poverty, class, abortion and feminism. From her open support of unions in earlier shows to her tribute to Native Americans toward the end of the series, Roseanne never shied away from contentious issues. The writer, Barbara Ehrenreich, once praised Roseanne Barr for representing "the hopeless underclass of the female sex: polyester-clad, overweight occupants of the slow track; fast-food waitresses, factory workers, housewives, members of the invisible pink-collar army; the despised, the jilted, the underpaid." Democracy Now! interviews Roseanne Barr and airs excerpts from the groundbreaking sitcom.

  • A few years ago there were some items about large corporations still extant if under other names that profited from slavery. Then there are "The Robber Barons" etc. Seems almost like a house built on blood. I find it all very depressing. Same can be said about many of Europe's fortunes; that they were based on serfdom and slavery. Perhaps after whatever nightmare is coming plays out people will become much more careful about what they build their nations on. Personally, I will welcome death.

  • @vladdrac88 You can go back even earlier than that...to Sam Houston and 'his gang's' get-rich-quick land-grab scam - marrying and jilting the daughters of landed families, one after another, becoming bigamist's in the name of real-estate acquisition - which resulted in Santa Ana's pulverizing of the Alamo. Texas is a beacon to the stupid and greedy, the world over...

  • Roseanne is extremely funny and insightful. Thanks DemocracyNow!

  • Norway, Beslan....polar opposite philosophies, same outcome. Killings of school children in numerous countries. There is a sameness to the crimes. Is there a difference if we put them aboard transports and gas them at central facilities or simply kill them where they live. Now they'll cut the peoples checks which they survive on and force them to riot to excuse the creation of a police state. I'll get it right eventually. Just thinking out loud. :)

  • @OnenessNow Seems like shits been coming out of Texas since the day Kennedy got shot.

  • This whole National Debt argument between the Democrats and Republicans: Would the "majority" support a police state if a sufficient number of unemployed began rioting?. All you have to do is stop the unemployment checks and "cut" enough other benefits so that the unemployed really become desperate. Better do something soon. Those things never work out as planned. Maybe there is such a creature as a soulless bean counter. After Prescott shouldn't the Bushes have become political poison?

  • Democracy is Green now? That's seems to be a good direction for democracy!

  • @boskinator ok stupid!
