I believe when he referred to himself as 'grumpy' he was saying it because he knew that was a popular stereotype of older people. He was being modest, "If you want to listen to an old fool", for example.

I have never even heard the "C" word before. If I heard it I would have had no idea that it was vulgar...weird.
