Very simple, I like it.
You said "so basically, it's a bed of water", does that mean you didn't add any nutrients to the water? Which, I guess, is possible since lettuce has fairly low nutrient requirements.

Im sorry there are nutrients i use botanicare pure blend pro about 20 bucks at the hydro store for a quart but it only takes about 2oz per gallon and then i just top it off with water for a week and then start over with more nutrients
