All I Want is a Spoonful

Recorded by Papa Charlie Jackson in 1925 this is one of the first (if not the first) recordings of the blues standard "Spoonful", which was made well known by many later musicians such as Charley Patton (who this song is often mistakenly credited to), Willie Dixon and Howlin' Wolf.

Papa Charlie Jackson was one of the first musicians to record a conventional blues and was one of Paramounts best sellers along with Blind Blake and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He was well known for his witty lyrics, Guitjo and double edged metaphors. He also played as an accompanist to some big musicians such as Ida Cox and Bessie Smith.

The known version of Spoonfool was written by Willie Dixon and made famous initially by Howlin' Wolf , subsequently by Cream and other groups. Though the 'standard' lyrics and great riff were originated by Dixon the song PARTIALLY derives from a family of 'Spoonful' songs that date back to at least the start of the 20th century.
