Filmed 22/7/08. On what was meant to be a 'Photo Only' event, 86101 unexpectedly passes us working the Sheildmur-Warrington RMT mail working, with a nice tone at the beginning.

Still, big thanks goes out to the AC Locomotive Group, who restored this and kept it to the highest standard, thanks a lot guys.

  • Nice sound from the motors working hard there. Why are the 325s never running under their own power anymore? Not that I'm complaining if it means we see more of the 86/87s on them.

  • At the time this video was taken the 325s were dragged from wherever to wherever to save their traction motors from getting worked out. The units were working near enough everyday with heavy loads and it was doing them damage, so 86101 and later 87002 was hired in from the AC Locomotive Group to haul the units. These days have long gone now, as DB Schenker has taken over the mail contracts

  • Nice vid, whats the 86 pulling force in comparison to say a class 56 diesel, Ive often wondered if theyre more powerfull as they have more current available? Any info appreciated !

  • I wouldnt say a sole Class 86 such as this has the pulling force of a Class 56, maybe not even two could match it. However if you look at it from a more economical and faster view, the Class 86 can run at a max of 110mph, compared to the Class 56s 85mph is it? Also the Class 86 has a better accelration compared to any diesel loco, and also electric dont really give off polution obviously. Hope this helps!

  • class 86/1 has 5,000 hp avalable to a class 56's 3,300. the 86/1 is a forunner to the class 87 as it was a 3 loco "test bed" for the trasformer and wheels setts. 86/2 and 4 are only 100mph capable. Using AC electrics would make sence instead of the sheds. Cheeper to run and maintaine. This loco is 40+ years old remember.

  • Regardless of everything you have just said, it is cheaper to run because its running over a fully electrified line! Would you rather have a shed running on a fully electrified line? No...

  • @Spectraman3849 that is very true what you just said.

  • Thats what i said. Do you realize how many class 86's were cut up as they were "life expired" I would far rather had see them and the class 87's taken on by outher companys instead of the shed invason. I cannot se a class 66 lasting for 40 years.

  • Cheers Joe!

  • classic stuff ,,a monster vid ,,thanks joe
