  • Yeah, the bearings sound like they are gone... so you wound up putting a new or used tranny in? It's just hard to believe that you'd have to replace a manual in an bmw, they are as tough as tanks!

  • I replaced it with a used one with lesser miles.

  • this car dd not need a whole transmission. In fact the symptoms are the common occurence associated with throwout bearing and shims that keep things quiet clutch related. It is a the first error behind the straight 6...and can even be fixed DIY for someone enthused.

  • No, you've got it backwards. A worn throwout bearing would make noise while the clutch is not engaged. (clutch pedal in)

  • I was refering to the bearings in the tranny, but glad to hear you got it going all the same. My friend has a Mercedes 300E, with the rare 5 speed, had to put an auto in it's place because he couldn't find a replacement 5 speed for a resonable price. If I am not being too nosey, how much was your replacement?

  • I was replying to boxer3main, but since you asked the transmission was like $200 or $250 I can't remember.

  • Mine has the exact same problem... :( I'm going after the input shaft bearing. Mine doesn't get stuck in gear, but it's been making this noise for 2 years now, loud in 1st 2nd & 3rd then quiet in 4th and 5th. Can't seem to find another tranny so I guess I'm gonna fix the one that's in it.

  • release bearing or some people calls em throw out bearing (BMW E12 E21 E23 E28 E30 E36 Z3 E39 E46 E53 X5 E85 Z4 Clutch Release Bearing OEM) search this on ebay, oem is always the best parts for your car last longer runs smoother and everything

  • You probably have the problem solved by now, but sounds exactly like the problem I had with an old VW bug. Turned out to be the "throw out bearing" that engages when the clutch is pushed in. You don't need a new transmission, just the throwout bearing associated with the clutch.

  • @newportcpl28570 I operated a fleet of these caravan.voyagers from 85-2006 and the problem you described is a shift modulator and are cheap and easily replaced as they are mounted externally on transmission case. same on both 3.0 and 3.6 engines

  • @bobomb01 I have seen throwouts make noise on both accasions, most of the newer cars use fluid pressure to apply the clutch so the bearing is riding on the preesure place at all times, have seen them make noise there and when applied it of course creats more pressure on the bearing so the niose increases,also it could be the front output bearing in the tranny itself, sometimes they sound the same, when the tranny is out grab the splines and see if the shaft will move up and down.

  • I have a 99 Caravan with 144k on it. it shifts rough and every third time it shifts (from dead stop) it will not shift up unless I take out of drive and turn the engine off and restart it and then the next two times it will shift up. What could be causing this. Also it is a 4 speed with a 3.0 engine. Been told it could be the up shift, down shift sensors.

  • You have probably fixed it now, but that is the classic sound of a broken clutch thrust bearing.
