I believe that was Cameron's form of admitting that she loved John. The purpose of the phone call was to make the parents believe that Riley was still alive. Cameron was supposed to mimic Riley's personality and voice, but she gives gives off a totally different personality that is not Riley-like. Plus you have to take into account that Riley never said or admitted that she loved John. We saw a lot of affection but no confession from Riley
