The first McDonald's in Portland, Oregon opened on February 27, 1960 at 551 NE 122nd Ave. (near Glisan St.) However, the original building was demolished in 1990 and a new McD's opened there in 1991 (with new address of 12109 NE Glisan St.).
In 1962, a McD's at SE Powell & 91st opened. The building was retained as a landmark (and which is also occasionally used for parties) after a new McD's that was built SW of the original location opened in 1980.
@serote1979 McDonalds' founder Ray Kroc came to despise the McDonald bros. in late 50's &for years gave the impression that he just picked the name "McDonald's" because he liked it better than "Burger Boy" or something similar. Kroc basicly tried to erase the McDonald brothers from the original history of the company. But in later years he would mention in talks that McDonald's already existed when first involved & 6 years later got the bros. to sell their rights to him due to friction building.
The Downey one is the oldest one still around. I beleive it was the fourth one, though. The one in Des Plaines was shut down in 1984 and then a replica was made across the street. Pass it almost every day.
@virusjc1 Well I'm an old McDonalds guy and the first franchised McDonald's was opened by Dave Fox in Arizona in 1952 and Roger Williams opened the third in Downey, California which is STILL operating today. Ray Kroc's was the 9th McDonalds but the first opened by McDonald's Corp which Ray founded..with permission from Dick and Mac McDonald of course:-) Ray never claimed to be the founder of McDonalds until after he bought out the brothers. He had a huge ego which may be why he was successful.
When I worked there in 1961-2, it was a privately owned licensee. Des Plaines was the first midwest McD. My paycheck was from Jacobs' Enterprises. McDonald brothers inspected for quality standards and uniformity.

Yes the very first McDonalds is in San Bernardino, California. This one featured in Des Plaines is the first FRANCHISE McDonalds.
