Prince shows how "touch" and "follow" the ball on the ground at liberty lead to obeisance and bowing. He parallel parks and, bareback and bridleless, asks me to hop on. He turns his head for lateral flexion, walks, trots, leg yields, yields hindquarters and moves his shoulders, all based on following the ball. Last, I start to teach him to "step up" his front feet. Prince LOVES these games.

  • By email: Jackie, I just love the video of you and Prince and the parallel parking!!! What a great idea! How long did it take to teach him that??

I also made a similar ball on a stick, never thought of teaching them to follow it!! I have got to try this tomorrow and may even take my clicker out of the closet! LOL

  • Really interesting. Thanks for sharing. But you are using treats with all your training as well as the ball. So, what happens when it's time to ride in a place you can't give treats or have the ball?

  • @mysticpasos It doesn't matter. Treats are an important marker and motivator when a horse is trying to learn a new behavior. Once a behavior is engrained and "owned" by the horse, treats aren't necessary to maintain it. I'll still give them a "good boy" and a rub or scratch and they will be happy.
