"Cycle superhighways" are a hype in 2009. London wants them* Copenhagen plans them** but in the Netherlands we have had such safe fast cycle routes for many decades. We just call them cycle paths, nothing more.
Here is a ride from the outskirts of Utrecht into the city center. The ride is 3 kilometers or 1.9 miles. It takes a little under ten minutes so that is a leisurly average speed of 18kpm or 11.3 mph. On a very pleasant fast and safe route as can be seen.

Lucky... In my city you only have bike paths (which are shared with pedestrians) in parks and cycle lanes that are only .5km at most surround a few schools. Also, you ride alongside the cars and always have the risk of being doored or run over by some early drunk driver... Or just another bad driver. Also, hardly anyone rides their bikes so it explains why (we don't have cycling things and such) but it's also because they don't have them (the lanes and paths) no one goes too (dangerous stuff)...

The moat turns into a free way was actually a 70's mistake... (well ok late 60 early 70's) I don't know if you are aware but they are putting the moat back.. (part of the reason for the rerouting of the bike path) :-) also real reason for all the parked bikes is the train station just around the corner. (well at least 50% of em I bet)
Nice ride by the way.. I have taken parts of that route many times..
