  • The "bitter" in "Extra Special Bitter" doesn't mean the beer will be really bitter. It refers to the English style of ales, the bitters. The ESB is a bigger version of a pale bitter, but not necessarily overly bitter. the IBU's should be on par with a standard American pale ale. I love the redhook ESB, though. If you can find Alesmith ESB, it's the best.

  • I just discoved this beer, and wow I got to say that its realy one of my favorite now!! but grrr! I have to go to Ontario cause here in Quebec they dont have it. But anyway its always a good trip to go over there as a Québécois ;p I LOVE ENGLISH BEEEERS!!!

  • Thanks for that mate. ESB is a term i have seen several times here in England. ESB is also the name of a horse which won the famous English Steeplechase The Grand National in 1956, capitalising on the strange fall of the Queen Mother's horse Devon Loch ridden by novelist Dick Francis.
