But you can hold it in a bag or wrapped in some kind of cover if you must carry it in state of impurity. But you can always recite the words of The Qura'an accept in state of major impurity. In a hadith related by At-Tirmidhi and also others, on authority of Ali ibn Abu Talib(may Allah be pleased with him): "Nothing prevented him( The Prophet, PBUH) from reciting The Quraan other than being in state of janaabah(major ritual impurity)

Assalaamu aleikom wr wb. I would convey to you brother NOT to touch the Holy Quraan in it original form in state of minor or major ritual impurity, because He the Almighty says in Surah Al Waqi'ah verse 79: "None touch it except the purified" It was also mentioned that Allah's Messenger (PBUH) sent a letter to the people of Yemen, as narrated by Amr ibn Hazm: " No one should touch the Book of the Quraan unless they are purified" This hadith is commonly accepted by the scholars.
