I am trying to put together some vids for digital tutorials as well as some that talk about the advantage of digital as a medium. But there have been some out there who have had the misconception that the computer somehow "aides" the artistic process in a digital painting-- meaning that you cannot "freehand" DRAW this type of thing without the help of the computer. I personally am fascinated by the different perceptions of people who do not seem to truly understand the process.
But here is a raw video excerpt for one of the little "documentaries" I will be editing together soon. The final vid will be examining the digital process as compared to the traditional process. Now, I must point out that I am simply scribbling a make-believe creature's eye on both digital and acrylic paint. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LOOK IDENTICAL. The purpose of doing both of these is to primarily display the fact that they are both freehand, but obviously different mediums. (If I do a colored pencil sketch of something, and then an oil painting of the same subject- they are going to be different... Same scenario).

So anyway--- I am posting this video to use the comment section as a forum and I'm inviting all of you to discuss your thoughts and opinions about what you see and how you feel about the digital vs. traditional debate. This is sort of some "research" to help me address certain things in my tutorials and documentaries that I will be creating.

Fire away!

  • God I want a tablet.

  • I think every medium is wonderful and that artists should take advantage and use digital methods of creating art a well as traditional methods. If paint is art on a canvas and writing is art through literature, why cant art be done through technology?

  • People seem to get digital and traditional together as if it's cheating and the other is "proper". Digital will always be superior in terms of efficiency, but you still have to be a good artist to make it look good. Another difference is that traditional will give you a different feel, depending on the medium such as canvas or matte paper because they have real world textures in it, whereas getting a gritty look on digital is difficult without it looking sterile. Like nylon vs electric guitar

  • what is the name of it

  • personally i am more skilled in digital than traditional medium but that's mostly because i lack practice in traditional, but i am able to draw just fine on paper, it's just that there's no ctrl-z button i can press to undo a line that's not exactly the way i want it to be, in real life. I dont get that perfect curve on 1st try, whether on paper or computer, that's all. Only difference is that on a computer i can erase and re-try quickly.

  • i just got a tablet so im still a noob XP but i hope im able to learn how to use it as well as u do!

  • Computer art is easer and will let you produce more vivade images and more realistic but it does take a long time to do it if you take a traditional artist that does both you will see that his digital art will look better because it's just easer its like taking staroids

  • I like both mediums. I like to draw on paper then scan it and use my wacom intuos4 for coloring.

  • I believe in my case digital is more dificult but that is because I use a mouse and its not even a laser one is kind of sad

  • (continued)

and i agree with fappyyplox that most ppl wuld only think that a tablet will automatically transform u into an epic drawer which isnt the case. in fact when u first use a tablet, one wuld realize that this is another different media and i stil need to learn to draw better. drawing traditionally and digitaly are similar but still totaly different. if u just started using one, its like learning to draw all over again... not exactly but kinda :)

  • i think that people who draw digitally are as great as an artist as the ones who draw traditionally, cuz to make a good peice u hav to know how to use ur tools as well as knowing how to create the peice in general. but of course one shuldnt just stay on one kind of media, u shuld expand and broaden ur horizon to make urself more.... useful? (cant think of another word)

  • Some people just assume that the use of a tablet makes them draw like Bob Ross.

And that the tablet and the programs do every ounce of the work.
