Discover how astronomers are learning more about how the universe works.
This beam splitter is a prototype part for Advanced LIGO, one of the most sensitive experiments ever designed. ALIGO is searching for gravitational waves caused by violent events in space, opening a whole new window on the cosmos.

  • Hi AVAMagneticlev, thanks for your question.

Alison Boyle - Cosmos & Culture curator - wrote a reply for you. "LIGO is designed to study very tiny effects on cosmological scales, rather than differences in gravity on the scale and timescale of the Earth. But gravity does vary at different locations on Earth depending on latitude, altitude and the makeup of the local geology. A satellite called GOCE was launched this year to map in detail the variations of Earth's gravity."

  • Would it be possable to detect small changes in gravity at diffrent places over differet geolagys and times using two portable but linked units using.
