An highlight-version of Honeysuckle Rose.
A Jam Session at "Victor", New York, March 31, 1937. Bunny Berigan (tp), Fats Waller (p), Tommy Dorsey (tb), Dick Mc Donough (g), George Wettling (dr).
This rare 78rpm-record is a 1938-German pressing, played on my "His Master's Voice" portable gramophone, "Serie 102c" - green leather case (1938). The 78rpm-record used to be owned by a label manager of the German "Victor" department. Before it had not been played often and is therefore in excellent condition.

  • Great! Wonderful classic jazz--happy music.

A new biography of Bunny Berigan has now appeared: "Mr. Trumpet--the trials, Tribulations and Triumph of Bunny Berigan by Michael P. Zirpolo. For more info search Mr. Trumpet

  • Believe I have Honeysuckle Rose by the same group on audio tape as the RCA All Stars. Pretty much the same, but more Waller with his great stride playing. Bless them all!

  • That chord progression Waller plays at 2:20...wow, to just pull something like that out of your heart and brain as an improvisation. I also love that little ornamentation in Dorsey's solo at 1:10.

  • I like playing TD hot swing. With his own band he sadley to smooth Jazz.

  • Yes indeed ... this IS what heaven is like.

I am officially stealing that line from you joomuck and thanks. MUCH thanks as well to Alex for posting it. Does it get much better then this? Don't think so. I can't say enough good things about this cut. All brilliant musicians and Bunny sure did know how to make a horn actually sing! If I'm good in this life, when I die I hope I get to hang out with these guys.

Cheers to all and Happy , Healthy New Year.

  • Every note from every horn - magnificent! Fats is Leader of the Pack! Heck, he wrote the tune! Berigan was Tommy Dorsey's favorite trumpet, too.

  • This sounds much jollier than the Marlene Dietrich cover. Hot news Pete Burns has done version too!

  • Yep. This was, basically, the first Metronome All Star record - 1937.

Dick McDonough is on guitar and I think George Wettling (back when he tried to sound like Ray Bauduc) is at the drums. I've got this 78 - "A Jam Session At Victor" - but it's in climate controlled storage with the rest of my 78's at the moment.....

  • What a great version of this song ! I was a huge fan of Bunny back in the 50's. When R+B came out, like most other guys, just sort of drifted to that and the newly emerging R+R ! Boy! Do I miss those days.
