Under the hood: the Electric Hubcap motor.
DIY 3-phase, "PMSM", 36 v, 127 a (4600 w / 5+ HP), axial flux, supermagnet, brushless, "pancake" motor - best layout of the best type of motor (highest efficiency), and one that you can make from commonly available things.

  • Better off with light non-magnetic materials to build a motor like that out of, it will create more of a magnetic feild because the steel kind of takes some of it away and the lightness will give it more power :)

  • Right you are! See Turquoise Energy News, about #36 or 37 to 39 for three fantastic changes, one of which is a polypropylene-epoxy stator to replace the steel one. The other two are low-loss iron powder coil cores, and coating the coils with ilmenite to bend the magnetic field into the core. No load currents are down to a fraction of what they were, so efficiency has gone from mediocre to WOW!
