When I was a child, I learned about and performed illusions - aka "magic tricks". I also learned about and performed tarot card readings and the like. I always explained to people that it was nothing supernatural. I wanted to make people wonder and think, but I never wanted to trick them or lie to them.

In this video, I compare magicians to preachers. I do not mean to insult anyone who makes religion their vocation. The pastor from the church I attended throughout most of my childhood was (and, I'm sure, still is) a very kind, caring man. I am being critical of televangelists, "mega-church" preachers, and their ilk.

  • "When I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child and thought as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things."

I'm not an atheist or christian - but wisdom like yours should be appreciated, thank you for sharing.

  • Yes, that's my favourite Bible passage. =) Thank you very much for your kind words.

  • You have a good point about self education. The world would be a much nicer place if everyone stopped believing in what was hand fed to them.

  • Thanks, Clifford. If you don't mind me prying, what are your metaphysics (if you have any?) - you strike me as a very cool, open-minded person. The vast majority of my friends are not atheists, but intelligent people are found in every culture and of every belief system. Except Scientology. =0

  • I'm a Christian, non denominational. Also, I'm a mac user, because light research will show that we are, in fact, a small religion. Since you mentioned physics once or twice, I also subscribe to string theory, however this is mostly due to the fact that I've only heard one or two alternatives, like universal gravitation. Interesting fact: The largest church of scientology is two blocks away from my dorm. Before the year is up, I'm gonna burn that bitch.

  • LOL, give me a call before you do, I'll make the trip out just to watch it burn. ;)

I'm a recent convert to the church of Steve Jobs, so I can relate to the Mac user thing.

  • Read Eugene Burger Magic and meaning.

Oh, by the way... there is no universe.

  • I'm not trying to change anyone's beliefs. I'm just here to tell people they are not alone if they should have doubts or questions. If you should decide that you simply can not believe anymore, remember that you are exactly the same person you were before. Religion doesn't make people good or bad - people make themselves good or bad. Peace to you!

  • YOu made me cry. My story is the same as yours...magic...Pen&Teller...

but I don't want to lose Jesus! It is so hard.
