Buying Jiffy pots for starting seeds is not expensive but why spend the money if you can make your own pots? In this little tutorial, Tiffany from NoOrdinaryHomestead.com shows you how to fold free pots from old newspapers. In just a few minutes you can have free pots for starting your crop the frugal way. The newspapers used are 35 x 51cm (about 14 x 20 in) or 40 x 57cm (16 x 22.5in). The majority of the paper is 35x51 but the bigger pieces make slightly larger pots which are great for planting multiple seeds or larger plants like zucchini, pumpkins, squashes, etc.

  • How do you keep the bottom of the pot from decomposing quickly and the bottom falls out?

  • @genmama1955 Because these are for seedlings, you want to make sure not to overwater or let the pots sit in water. Misting or just adding a few drops of water at a time will keep the pots in good shape as well as keep your seeds/soil from mildewing.

  • never mind all that, I want a how-to video on what ever it is your fermenting in those giant 30gal containers in your background :o)

  • @trentontrading The large one was apple wine and the smaller one I think gooseberry. We're always trying something new with fruit. But our favorite thing to make is champagne vinegar with cheap bottles of sekt and prosecco that we always seem to end up with. Super easy and oh so tasty.

  • first few times it was hard, but wow now so easy and they are really tough.I have now done it with 2 sheets of newspaper for tougher jobs.we get thick brown paper in 2 & 3 foot sheets from work, that gets put in the recycle bin.it is harder to work with but it makes nice large tray/pots and last a long time.the only thing i do to strengthen the bottoms is use brown cardboard box and cut it to inside size. thank you

  • I've been making and using these pots for years and find if a put them in some sort of tray, about 1-2 inches deep they don't fall apart. And I do put one staple on each side to hold the flaps down. By the time they are planted you never find the staple. In about 15 years I have yet to find a staple - they too decompose. Thanks for your video.

  • Thanks lady!!!

  • A word of warning for the exploring type, if you want to do more than 1 or 2 layers of newspaper, you need: glue and a very heavy physics textbook. or just a really heavy book.

  • Attempt 3, got it! Thank you for the vid, beats using a cup like the one from e-how. I live in a house of coffee mugs...

  • want to punch the camera man....how the hell am i supposed to see what she is doing when you zoom out like ten feet.....

  • Those look really sturdy and they are square! Love it!

    Thank you!

  • Thank you for sharing this. It looks great and I can't wait to try it!
