A little info about this slideshow:

We were closing down one of our corporate offices in San Francisco and intended to drive it back to Utah. Along the way, we encountered a slight problem. Next thing we knew, thick black smoke was pouring in the cabin. We got out fairly quickly and waited for help. Nobody got hurt. We unloaded one fire extinguisher on this inferno but it didn't even make a dent. 20-25 minutes later the F.D. came, but by that point, this was a writeoff. We were literally in the middle of nowhere. This happened at Donner's pass about 45 minutes west of Truckee, California. The California Highway Patrol was kind enough to give us a ride back to Truckee where we rented a one-way car and went to Reno. From there we got a one-way ticket back to Salt Lake City. We lost our luggage in the fire. To soften the trauma on the 8 year old, we took him bowling. Ironically they gave free socks with the rental of some shoes, which did make us laugh pretty hard.

Insurance did reimburse our loss.

  • LIKE HE REALLY WOULD TAKE PICS OF A BURNING UHAUL

  • @TyBlood13 Well let me ask you this. You only have one small fire extinguisher from a passer-by to put out this inferno, and it doesn't do any good. You have a phone that happens to have a small camera built in. What would you do? Cry? I for one documented the whole thing so that we could show U-Haul what happened and what they needed to improve :)

  • We just lost everything last week...uhaul fire, for those who say why''''ruptured fuel line..big boom all gone

  • I know your pain buddy

  • Great song selection. Did they determine the cause of the fire?

  • A single "pop" was felt under the passenger seat about 20 seconds before this happened. Our best guess is that the tranny line broke and sprayed flammable liquid all over a hot engine block. The pop wasn't big at all, in fact, it felt like a rock had hit underneath the wheel well.

  • You had plenty of time to open the back, take a bunch of pictures, and not take a single piece of luggage out? Obviously looking for that insurance money. Thanks for the high premiums

  • @bigdidgerido You apparently don't understand fires!

  • If you're doing a long distance move, NEVER rent UHaul. The dealers don't give a shit about the state of the ones reserved for that because they'll never see that truck again. Local moves, I guess they're okay, but why bother? Go with one more reputable like Budget or Enterprise.

  • @dawgdan1 Look what people do to U-Haul trucks here on Youtube. But people still want that cheap price with it and that means keeping the truck in fleet longer. Either that, or you can exchange your left nut for a reservation with Budget just to find out the truck you reserved two weeks ago was rented out to a person who walked in there that morning.

  • @dawgdan1 That's because they're FORDS.

  • You people wonder why? Because their fleet's full of F.O.R.D.s. Catch my drift? Fuck Fords.

  • this same thing just happened to me on april 3. very interested in knowing if you or anyone was reimbursed. i just heard from the repwest (u hauls insurance co) and they basically wanted to give me a few thousand for everything that i owned so now im forced to get a lawyer.

  • Uhaul's preventative maintenance program consists of not doing any maintenance until you're stranding on the side of the road, watching everything you own burn.

  • U-Haul trucks are JUNK
