Katadyne water filter does it all trusted and tested. In the nastiest water ever been on just about ever expedition but where they go I'd filter then boil but did see any get sick so if I was to bet my life on it katadyne pocket then boil if you have doughts

Why mess with any of these way when a katadyne pocket does 13000 gallon @ 279.00 bucks used around the world on expedition around the world with the active carbon you get great water fast quick

False dave5708 katadyne pocket kills everything even takes radation out of water

@freewill51 You're right man, no filter will remove bacteria. Bacteria need to be killed using either a chemical solution, UV or otherwise
-
@TheGraceofChrist A gravity fed filter, using many layers of sand

buddy of mine turned me onto FirstNeed after we went backpacking and I witnessed how nice this set up is first hand, especially if you need water for multiple people. Hang a water bag or dry sack in a tree, a tube runs from the bottom then into a pre filter then through the FirstNeed XL, then into your water container. No pumping needed(a pump does come with it, which comes in handy when its below 32 degrees) Let gravity do the work for you! Stay poopy-butt free and go with FirstNeed!

there are a lot of water filtering tecniques that can be used when backpacking...there are several on the market that will remove bacteria and protozoa and can ONLY remove viruses with the use of chemical, viruses are much smaller than single cell organisms. Ceramic filters dont filter smaller than 0.3 microns and viruses can be 0.2 and smaller. The ONLY water filter on the market that is certified by the EPA to remove viruese without the use of chemicals is the FirstNeed XL.
How does a filter get rid of bacteria? Afraid not dude, you been reading the back of too many packages that come with the products. All you need is a cup full of sand, boil, and a drop of bleach. (I just pissed off a bunch of people that like to waste money)
