Animation and music by Wendy Wagner 2008©
"Soporpet", 2008, Animation with sound. Running time: 59 Seconds
This animation conveys the hypnotic effect of petting. It plays between this seemingly benign act with our desire to own something. The look on Roberto's face can be interpreted as enjoyment or sufferance, possibly making the viewer uncomfortable. The music's crescendo along with the look in Roberto's eyes conveys his complete trust of my affection, as I slick back and caress his long hair.
This accompanied my painting series "Beam Me Up," I produced three animations. These were made at the same time to address the subject in a new way.
I used a technique called Rotoscoping where I draw thousands of individual frames (24 frames per second) using an interactive pen display. The drawings overlay my video as a reference in order to create only a few moments of animation. I also composed the soundtracks for these on the computer with music recording software. Working with layers of sounds and animation is reminiscent of my adding and editing technique with different colors of gesso, pencil and acrylic in my paintings.
