If it's intermittent like what you seem to have here, it's likely an electrical problem like a sensor or solenoid. A mechanical problem would either be there all the time or get worse.

these vans are rock solid except for the transmissions that honda dropped the ball on :(

On the Odyssey theres a TCS button on the left maybe you have to push it to move faster.

@Oreckel WHOA! this was due to the solenoid? i'm going to have take a look at this. we have a 2001 Odyssey and it is having similar problem. can you be more specific about the soenoid connector problem? it worked it self loose?

update: i have a 2003 ex-l. its up to 174,000 miles on its orignal transmission. if you drive on the highway all the time doing 80, this car will last you to 200K.

@Bwoull123 I got the car back a couple of weeks ago. It was a loose "solanoid" connector or something of the sort. In the end a simple fix that took him forever to find. Check out the comment I made earlier, starting with "The transmission in this video..."

The transmission in this video is almost brand-new and still under warranty, which is why I was concerned enough to make a video for my mechanic (who couldn't reproduce the problem initially).
I don't understand the technical details, but the basic problem involved a loose solanoid (sp?) connector on the transmission. This put the engine into "fail-safe" mode where it stayed in 4th gear. That explains why the car accelerates so slowly. Final fix was tightening up those connectors. Nice & simple
