Many years ago Stan Freberg recorded a humorous spoof of the Lawrence Welk Show as it existed back in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This short clip is an attempt to put a face to the personalities spoofed on his record, and to pay tribute to both Stan Freberg and the personalities on the Lawrence Welk Show that he spoofed. I hope everybody enjoys it!

Listened again for the 10 millionth time. Stan Freberg may be the one stand out ingenious who ever sold a set of encyclopedias. You know? I remember reruns of "Cecil" on tv as a kid. Cartoons, too.

I don't know how you could edit this so well, it just had me rolling in the aisles. I played this in our family's living room one night while my parents were eating in the kitchen -- and my Dad came running out with this puzzled look on his face. "What the heck is going on in here?" (Lawrence Welk was a big favorite of his.) I don't think he ever did see the humor of it, but I nearly died laughing at his reaction.

Thanks, hungryjoe222. Stan Freberg did such a clever job with this record, even today it's almost like a real Welk show! I appreciate your generous comment -

Yes, we miss the days when humor was clean and could be viewed or listened to by the whole family. The people you mention were true classics. Thanks for your post, deenie1219.

Most people in and out of the music business over the age of thirty hated rock 'n' roll in the 1950's, not just Stan Freburg, and with good reason; compared to what they had live through during the Swing Era and the Jazz Age, rock 'n' roll was crap.

"Thank You For All Those Cards and Letters, All You Out in Television Lant" was actually a pretty nice song.

The story I heard was that Lawrence was going to sue Stan, Capitol Records and everybody else. However, his son sat him down and explained to him that the parody was a Top 40 hit record being played on hundreds of radio stations nationwide, and did he know much it would cost to buy that kind of publicity? Lawrence may have been somewhat hokey but he was a shrewd businessman and realized his son was right. All was well!

Lawrence Welk was photographed for Life Magazine with his car. His California personalized license plate was "A1 AN A2." (The same magazine page showed a photo of former Governor Edmund G. Brown Sr. posed next to his car. The plate? "EX GUV")

He did NOT appreciate Stan Freburg for making this record. He apparently didn't understand the humor.
