Having looked at it again I have just noticed that there is a panel sat to the right of the screen. This was the Open Kata event and points were awarded in the same way as in skaing (6.5 6.6 etc) so this was part of the competition.

Just looked at it again and lack of other people on the mat means you are right. Although this would have been a practice session prior to the actual competition.
-
Actually,
this is freestyle, they are the only competitors on the mat at the time...in other competition, you would be correct

Like many martial arts there is always an element of demonstration of kata. You cant see them but there is another pair doing the same techniques beside them and the judges are comparing - and then announce the better pair - hence why it is referred to as competition.
-
By the way, is this Chris Moran & Danielle Jones? If it is i know them both :)

The shikko originates from when in Japan they knelt down to eat. So someone could happily be sat there eating then another person would come up from behind or in front and attack them. In aikido you need to be able to do techniques on your knees for this reason.
-
Sorry, typo.
If you can do it on your knees you can do it when standing. It's the same principle.
-
If you can do is on you knees you can do it when standing as well. It's the same principle.
-
it can be useful if you get knocked down to the ground, and are attacked as you're getting back up (when you are on your knees)
Me too...:)

There are many facets to shikko, one and the foremost is that all movement originate from the center. Thus, removing the appendages and employing movement from the center yeilds pure extension of the body. If you notice, there is no bending at the waist, just full, fluid body movement. The center is always moving forward.
