On the surface this may not seem plausible, but the FBI didn't check "his credentials" because this is a routine public relations interview and they got a request from a big media company, so they don't do background check on journalists coming in for an interview (and for all they knew Ali G was a journalist), because this would infringe the rights of the journalist. This is not an investigation, so yeah, the FBI didn't check his credentials.
