    Sorry, piezoelectric, like a giant piezoelectric lighter.

    Those oarfish must go all tingly in their whiskers, just like catfish which also have whiskers (or "barbels") and catfish or "Namazu" are said to CAUSE earthquakes in Japan, because I hypothesise because they were seen to writhe about prior to the onset of an earthquake.

    Deep water fish were never seen writhing in pain at the electricity caused in their whiskers since they are so deep beneath the ocean.

    The pizo electric effect.

    Maybe some people, some animals can create to the stimuli coming from deep below.

    And hence why oarfish and ribbon fish, with their long tentacle like pelvic fins - single rays or strands meters in length - move up out of deep water prior to an earthquake. The static electricity creates an electric potential across these sensitive fins (made to replace eyes in the darkness of deep see).
