I get the impression that with all the clips that count to 40, numbers up to 40 may have been added to the curriculum later in the run. When I was a little kid, all the counting stuff only went up to 10 or 20.
I learned Spanish numbers up to 20 from Sesame Street and remember amazing my grandparents and their friends by counting in Spanish when I was at their house at 3 years old.
I then learned Spanish numbers through the 70s from a bilingual caller in a bingo game a few years later.

I quess when you're mad, you count to ten and you'll be calm, but when when you're sad, you just count to 40.

When they did that Cyranose de Bergerac episode in Season 24, he tried countimg to 30 to control his anger. He was calm when he was finished, but he got mad again.
