@Instucablanator Those "wheels" allow the pilots to modify the planes pitch (horizontal orientation). When auto pilot is engaged you may see these elements move as the AP compensates for any pitch changes.

@jonstewartforprez True. There have also been some cases (last one I heard of was a 737 into Sao Paulo, brazil: TAM flight 3054) where one of the thrust reversers was not working and the pilot only placed the lever of the engine that had a fully functional thrust reverser into idle position. When thrust reversers were deployed one engine was still at near full power causing the plane to veer off the runway and crash. The pilot had disengaged auto pilot to bring the plane down closer to the thres

@davidemaser Also, don't forget, spoilers are only auto deployed when the thrust levers are in idle. Boeing aircrafts during autoland automatically lower throttle to idle, ensuring spoiler deployment upon touchdown. There was a tragic incident involving an Airbus that overshot a wet runway because the pilot didn't retard the throttles to idle (and thus no spoiler deployment).

I'm from America...
The computer saying "Retard" is SO funny...
That's how intelligent I am.

@jonny96 Allow me to clarify some things: 1. My photo was taken awhile ago I am not in my 40s I am much older now. 2. I am not sexist and enjoy videos of boys as well. 3. I cannot leave the country at this time unless I wish to violate my probation. 4. All Middle Eastern countries should be leveled along with the dune coons that are dumb enough to live there are believe the koran. Don't be mad, it's turning me off.
"Retard" has nothing to do with the rate of descent but is a reminder to the pilot to retard (or decrease) the thrust levers to idle position. Since autothrust does not position the levers in idle it is a reminder to the pilot to decrease the thrust levers position in preparation for reverse thrust (if necessary). On most other planes the levers position follows the auto-thrust value hence making the "retard" warning unnecessary.
