This is a medley I made with some of the best parts from Octavarium. Since there is many mellow songs on this album and that there is no instrumental part in every songs, I decided to use only instrumental parts because the video would have been 45 mins and making a medley out of lyrics would have been out of my duty... So don't be sad if there's not the part you're waiting for but Im pretty sure you'll enjoy this anyway.
I had so much fun doing this because there is some crazy parts from Portnoy that are very challenging to play one after the other (you'll understand more in part2/2). Personally, I think this one was more difficult to play that sysdrumedley even if it looks easiest.
I had three objectives when I made this video: 1) Play every single note or fill or even crash that Portnoy does on the album.
2) Play this medley in one take (because it's easy to make some kind of editing which I would call "cheatditing". It would have been so easy to play segment by segment till it's perfect and then make a video out of it that would look crazy but that is finally not.
3) Even if it's "one take", I wanted to make this video visually interesting for everybody who would like to watch this. My first DT medley was fun to listen but I admit that a 1 angle video can becomes boring (even more if it's an 18 min song like sysdrumedley chaos). So I hope you'll like the 4 angle (with the feet sometimes) concept. I have to admit that Cobus Potgieter was a great influence on that part.
I'm very pleased that I achieved these three objectives and I'm satisfied with the result though there is some mistakes (find out which ones for fun). And, I know, sometimes the snare sounds like "flams" which means i'm slightly off-time... sorry about that.
***SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE RECORDING***
This video is the second time I had the 14 minutes almost perfect because when I did the first one, I forgot to put my front cam to record.
It took 24 takes to have this one.
On this video my left wrist hurts a lot cause I was injured around "take 15". I have an old wrist problem and because I was playing without stopping for hours (some challenging and complicated DT stuff) it came back and I needed to put ice to relief it.
I worked on the track a year ago but I was very busy in the meanwhile. That's why it took so long to record it.
It took three set of sticks to make this video and my Chinese Aax is cracked (you can't hear it, it sounds great anyway)
On these video, I call my left Cam : "the rockin' cam"
The reason why I call it like that is because the stand wasn't stable and as you can see in the video, it was rockin' back and forth when there was a lot of bass drum playing.
This album is one of my favorite from DT because there is many references to prog rock history in it. There are some allusions to Pink Floyd as well so that's why I decided to wear the dark side of the moon T-Shirt.
I had to dispute a copyright claim and I was successful against WMG for this video. This is my third dispute successful. (22/04/2009)
