thats not allways a good idea. the fire could cause the bottle to release toxic chemicals into the water and they could make u even sicker than some parisite.

Throwing dead carcases (Human and animal) into the enemies' drinking water was the first biological warfare.

Always filter the water first and never use plastic for sterilizing water (boiling water). Stay away from waterways that have dead animals near them or in them or other toxic debris.

If you make your tripod with three levels of clothe and in the first you put straw or grass in the second you put gravel and sand that you have sterilized in your cook pot and basically roasted. and in the last you put ground charcoal you'll have made a filteration system nearly as good as the expensive katadyn. You can treat the water with iodine then pour it through this system and it will remove at least most of the iodine taste.

@sim0b Filter the water through a bit of rock salt, the radiation should be absorbed by it as well as the salt filtering out and killing bacteria. Thank you chemistry class.
