I was in Santa Marta and the Sierra at exactly this same time! 8-) I look forward to returning later this year...it's a wonderful spot on our beautiful planet. Was insect repellent forbidden? There's a plant in the called "Fortuna," and it is indeed that as it is a natural repellent and grows plentifully in many parts of Colombia...maybe you could try it if you go back. Te deseo mucha suerte y tranquilidad desde aqui!
