Here I explain one reason why palestine is important to me. It has to do with bigotry, in particular a form of bigotry which is seen as acceptable and even justified by far too many people in our society. This makes it particularly dangerous and insidious, but also, it helps to fuel the ongoing abuse of palestinians and other arabs in countries where our government has installed puppet regimes or supported corrupt tyrants against the wishes of the people.

Also, I speak just a little bit about why it seems so hypocritical to me when people criticize the islamic world because of their treatment of women, and hold up the western world as an example moral purity. It was not the western world that freed women, it wasn't any church or government that did it, it was rebellious and subversive women who brought about women's liberation, and it has only happened very recently. Yes, women should be equal in the islamic world, but we should not hold "western religion" up as an example, and neither should we try to bomb them to equality.

In truth, it seems to me, when people make these sorts of criticisms, it is not done as a constructive criticism, it is more like an outright dismissal. We can dismiss them as human beings because we treat women better than they do, and therefore we should just kill them all, men, women, and children, in order to rectify this situation. When you actually spell it out, it doesn't sound so good after all.

Well, on the question of 'equality' of women, one must remember that in Israel women and men both have to serve in the military and 80% of women have experienced sexual harassment or abuse. I am not Muslim myself but I know a great deal about actual treatment of women in Islam and this is worse. You can check for Rela Mazali for this.
